By Peter Dietsch-PCA. Living Stones’ offers insight into better understanding - and then living out - the vows that we take when becoming members of a local church. Each chapter addresses the particulars of one of the five vows that professing believers take when they join a local Presbyterian Church. By examining the biblical foundation of these five vows, the author covers such topics as: the necessity of God’s sovereign mercy, justification by faith alone, Holy Spirit empowered sanctification, spiritual life in the church, and the importance of ecclesiastical authority for our growth in grace. Above all, ‘Living Stones’ seeks to inspire a love for the bride of Christ and a zeal for the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, the house and family of God - the Church.
Peter M. Dietsch grew up in the church as the son of a missionary and then pastor. From his parents he learned a love for Christ and His people. A former army officer, Peter earned his Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary (Orlando), where he also met his wife, Stacie, who was earning her Master of Arts in Theological Studies. They have been blessed with four ‘living stones’ of their own: Stephen, Timothy, Lydia, and Titus. As an an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America, Peter has experience as an army chaplain and local church pastor. His strong desire is that God would be glorified in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever (Eph. 3:21).

Every church in the PCA looks forward to having new people join their church. Every church has a different way of going about preparing them for membership. Now there is a set of materials to help those churches to teach these newcomers just what they are agreeing to according to the Book of Church Order.
The first book, What Did I Say When I Joined the Church, by Glen McClung is an outline of all the topics relevant to each of the five questions we put to the prospect. This is a helpful work for the one leading the study.
The second book, Living Stones, by Peter Dietsch, is written for those coming for membership in your church. It covers the five questions they will be agreeing to before the congregation. It is not a difficult read, nor a long read. It is well written and very helpful. This, along with What Did I Say When I Joined the Church, will go a long way to helping you keep new members for a long time, and helps them to know exactly what they are agreeing to do.
I would also like to recommend two additional studies:
Am I Good Enough?, by Richard Ramsay – this is one of the best studies I have come across to take non-Christians and brand new Christians through to help them understand the foundational truth of Christianity. It is a fill-in-the-blank format. There are 15 studies, all from a Reformed perspective. The explanations are short, to the point, simple enough for anyone who has no church background to understand. There are Bible memory verses they can cut out in the back, and other follow-up helps. This will be a great book to take your people through to train them in doing evangelism.
The other is a booklet, An Inquirer’s Guide to the PCA, can be given to people after they have been coming to your church for a while and are interested in finding out more about Presbyterianism. The booklet contains information about the history of Presbyterianism, the five distinctives of the PCA, our form of church government, brief details on each of our committees and agencies, our Identity, Mission, Vision, and Values statements, and a list of further resources.
What you have here is a list of materials that will take a person from a non-Christian all the way to membership. Don’t miss using any of these great materials.
