By Glen McClung-PCA.
This book is an in-depth Scriptural analysis of the questions a person is required to answer when joining a PCA (or any Reformed) church. Our affirmative responses to these questions are not just "something we have to say" to become a member of a group. They are covenantal promises entered into with the Lord. It is imperative, therefore, that we go to God’s Word and see what He says about what we said. This course can almost be read as prose, but I have put it in a detailed outline format to organize the material for teaching and study. May the Lord see fit to use this as an effective tool in your life and ministry.
"How good it is to have this book back in print! Surely every Presbyterian will find McClung’s approach to be wise, just, and useful."
Lou Veiga, Senior Pastor Covenant, PCA Houston, Texas
In these days of "buffet Christianity" and privatized "choose a church" mentality, Pastor McClung’s excellent work compels us to honestly consider and to keep with integrity those vows of membership we take in Christ’s body, the Church. We are herein reminded that we are called to serv e, not to survive, and to sacrifice, not to consume. How refreshing!
Cortez A. Cooper, Retired PCA Pastor, Former MNA Coordinator
Glen A. McClung has served as the pastor of six churches during the course of his career from 1964-1997. He is now honorably retired and living in Asheville, NC. This work has also been translated into Russian.

Every church in the PCA looks forward to having new people join their church. Every church has a different way of going about preparing them for membership. Now there is a set of materials to help those churches to teach these newcomers just what they are agreeing to according to the Book of Church Order.
The first book, What Did I Say When I Joined the Church, by Glen McClung is an outline of all the topics relevant to each of the five questions we put to the prospect. This is a helpful work for the one leading the study.
The second book, Living Stones, by Peter Dietsch, is written for those coming for membership in your church. It covers the five questions they will be agreeing to before the congregation. It is not a difficult read, nor a long read. It is well written and very helpful. This, along with What Did I Say When I Joined the Church, will go a long way to helping you keep new members for a long time, and helps them to know exactly what they are agreeing to do.
I would also like to recommend two additional studies:
Am I Good Enough?, by Richard Ramsay – this is one of the best studies I have come across to take non-Christians and brand new Christians through to help them understand the foundational truth of Christianity. It is a fill-in-the-blank format. There are 15 studies, all from a Reformed perspective. The explanations are short, to the point, simple enough for anyone who has no church background to understand. There are Bible memory verses they can cut out in the back, and other follow-up helps. This will be a great book to take your people through to train them in doing evangelism.
The other is a booklet, An Inquirer’s Guide to the PCA, can be given to people after they have been coming to your church for a while and are interested in finding out more about Presbyterianism. The booklet contains information about the history of Presbyterianism, the five distinctives of the PCA, our form of church government, brief details on each of our committees and agencies, our Identity, Mission, Vision, and Values statements, and a list of further resources.
What you have here is a list of materials that will take a person from a non-Christian all the way to membership. Don’t miss using any of these great materials.
