Knowing His Great Name: God’s Covenantal Character, Our Identity, and His Community, Student Edition
Author: Rachel Ann Craddock - PCA
Have you ever wondered what God’s name is? You’re not alone.
Moses anticipated this question from the Israelites when God sent him back to lead them out of Egypt (Exodus 3:13). To the people of the ancient Near East few things were as important as one’s name, for a name provides identity, character traits, and connections to family, culture, and history. Thus, throughout Scripture, God has connected Himself to His covenant people through the revelation of His personal name (Exodus 3:15) as well as by the names given to describe Him.
Students are invited to journey through the Old and New Testaments in this study of twelve names by which God has revealed Himself and His character. As they grow in understanding of who God is, they will also unpack how God’s attributes shape the way they think about their identity and how they relate to others within the community of God’s people.

Families can study these names of God together by using the adult study, Knowing His Great Name, by Michael and Rachel Ann Craddock as well as the beautiful children’s book, His Name Is Great, by Rachel Ann Craddock and illustrated by Nancy Hooker. Both can be found at the PCA Bookstore.

Author bio: Rachel Ann Craddock is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and a Bible teacher at Hilton Head Christian Academy. Rachel is the author of Slowly Unraveled: Changed from the Inside Out, a contributor to Hinged: Vitally Connected to Christ and His Church, a coauthor of Knowing His Great Name, and author of His Name Is Great. To combine her love for teaching and the Bible, Rachel enjoys speaking at women’s events. She and her family attend Hilton Head Presbyterian Church where her husband serves on the pastoral team. Together, Michael and Rachel have four children: Ezra, Asher, Caleb, and Lydia Jane.

As a youth pastor for 29 years at my church, this is a study that I would use and embrace in ministry. It is laid out well for students to dig deep into the character and attributes of God, but it also helps students seek truth that can be applied to themselves and their lives while being focused on Christ. The way the study is structured is excellent, with impactful and profound questions for students to ponder and answer. Likewise, the format of the study is excellent to be used in small group settings with and for students. I highly recommend this book

In my two decades of working with students, one of my greatest frustrations has been finding material that is biblically sound, age appropriate, and powerful in its message. Rachel Craddock's Knowing His Great Name is a resource that checks all of those boxes. In an era of rising anxieties where we see increasing numbers of students without a foundation they can build upon, it is more important than ever to know the truth about God's nature. Knowing His Great Name provides a deeply theological but practical resource that will help students know who the true God is and how that affects their lives.
