This is a book of sermons on the life of David which
Kendall first preached at Westminster Chapel in London during the late 1980s.
They have been slightly edited for better reading. The book is dedicated to his
father who resides in Georgia and is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. I was
impressed with Kendall’s devotion and affection for him.
In the introduction, Kendall refers to David as a great
statesman and military, political, and spiritual leader. Yet, as a father, David
was far from perfect. “David was one of the worst fathers in the Bible and it
will come out in the second part of the book. And when I think of how much God
loved David, this gives me great consolation.” The book is full of gems like
that.
Kendall has a unique gift of opening the Scriptures and
taking the reader or audience with him into the text. You do not have to read
too far in each chapter before you begin to see yourself or see real application
of his words to your life. Kendall does an exceptional job of integrating sound
exegesis, streetwise explanation, and real life, personal application.
The book contains sixty-four sermons or chapters, each
well-developed and outlined, and ends with a helpful subject index. It will
stand along with other outstanding books on David by A. W. Pink and Alexander
Whyte as a gold mine for preachers, a great devotional for individuals and a
helpful study guide on the life of David. If you want to put some life back into
your spiritual walk or need some ideas for sermonic material on David, you will
find this book a welcomed edition.
