Six times in the book of Exodus, God says, “I will meet
with you.” What an amazing statement! Jean Fleming asks, “How does a person
like you or me respond to God’s offer to meet with us? How will you reply to
His invitation? Will you echo His words of friendship and say, ‘I will meet
with You, Lord’?”
Feeding Your Soul not only talks about the benefits
of having a consistent special time to meet with God but also explores the
struggles, obstacles, and spiritual dryness we all encounter. It is written
sequentially starting with the nuts and bolts of a quiet time (when, where, how,
how long) and then instruction on how to maintain a quit time throughout life.
Concerning spiritual dryness, the author points out that there is a distinction
between spiritual dryness and spiritual coolness. “In dry times, we miss the
sense of God’s presence. The Word may be lifeless and prayer mechanical. We
desire the intimacy of former days, but it eludes us. Spiritual coolness, on
the other hand, results when we cling to the sin God points out to us and refuse
to turn from it. A chilled spirit lacks an appetite for the things of God and
is accompanied by hardness and resistance.
This book will be a helpful guide for those who have never
regularly set time aside to meet with God. It will also encourage those who
struggle with consistency or just need a fresh look at the quality of the time
spent.
